What is slab on grade foundation ?

A slab-on-grade foundation—also known as a floating slab foundation—is a structural engineering practice in which the concrete slab that will serve as the foundation for a building or other structure is formed from a mold that is set into the ground. The concrete is then poured directly into the mold, leaving no space between the ground and the structure. This method of foundation construction is most commonly used in warmer climates where seasonal freezing and thawing of the ground is less of a concern and where there is no need for heat ducting to be installed beneath the floor of the building. You can take consultation from any contractor regarding the installation process.

Slab-on-grade Design?

The most significant heat loss from slab-on-grade occurs in the perimeter band of soil immediately adjacent to the building. By strategically placing rigid insulation in the ground, this heat loss can be used to keep the slab from freezing and heaving.
Horizontal insulation installed in “wings” sloping outward, around the perimeter of the
slab, has the following benefits:
• It extends the heat flow path,
• It controls heat loss,
• It moves the line of frost penetration away from the slab, reducing frost heave

Structural slab vs slab on grade

  • A grade slab rests at every point as in a highway slab while a structural slab is held on the four edges by beams or walls as in buildings.

  • A grade slab requires less steel reinforcement than a structural slab.

  • A grade slab requires steel reinforcement at closer spacing to take care of varying temperature effects which is not so in the case of a structural slab.

  • A grade slab will be provided by expansion and contraction joints whereas a structural slab does not have such joints..

  • A grade slab is cast in alternate panels, whereas a structural slab has to be poured in a single continuous operation.

  • A grade slab is subject to more weathering due to the traffic and the climate whereas a structural slab does not bear the same effects.

Advantages of slab foundations

  • One of their many benefits is that these foundations are generally less expensive to construct that pier and foundations. Since wooden members such as floor joists aren’t required, as they are with pier and beam structures, that price is eliminated. In addition, since there is no crawlspace under them, utility bills associated with air conditioning and heating are lowered.
  • They allow for a wider range of flooring options, including stained or scored concrete.
slab on grade advantages
  • Another advantage of having a concrete slab foundation is that it doesn’t take long to create them. The slab itself is poured in a single day. Of course, there is preparation work in advance. The entire process can often be accomplished in four days from start to finish, assuming weather is not a problem.
  • Since there is no crawlspace (or airspace) under them, utility bills associated with air conditioning and heating are lowered.
  • Mold and mildew are not an issue, nor or rodents or insects. That’s because there is no space under the slab for mold to form or rodents to nest.
