Here's What's Happening at the New Cherokee High School and Other Construction Projects
Progress is being made on the Cherokee High School’s new campus, which is currently ahead of schedule. Trey Moores, the Chief Support Services Officer for the Cherokee County School District, shared this update with the school board on Thursday.
The anticipated opening of the new school is set for August 2026.
The school district reports significant progress on the new Cherokee High School campus. Currently, 90% of the structural steel placement in the academic building is finished, and the first phase of structural steel work for the Career, Technical, Agricultural Education (CTAE) building has commenced.
Construction of the exterior walls for the main gym is in progress, and the concrete slabs for the second gym and auditorium are already in place.
The new high school, according to Trey Moores, will encompass approximately 473,000 square feet, significantly larger than the combined size of the existing main Cherokee High building and the Cherokee North campus.

School Board Member Susan Padgett-Harrison praised the project, highlighting its rapid progress and the economic benefits it brings to the community through consistent onsite work.
Moores noted that the new Cherokee High School is designed to accommodate around 3,600 individuals. Currently, Cherokee High, with the oldest main building in the district and the highest student enrollment exceeding 3,000, expanded in 2018 by incorporating the neighboring Canton Elementary School campus, now known as Cherokee North.
Additionally, construction at the Free Home Elementary School replacement site is advancing well, with block wall construction completed and the installation of mechanical systems ongoing. This project is also ahead of schedule, set to open in August 2025.
Other ongoing projects include the expansion of Creekland Middle School, the addition of a second gym at Creekview High School, with utility installations in progress for these extensions, and the upcoming construction of additional classrooms at Woodstock High School, where fencing is finished and utility relocation preparations are underway. These new classrooms are expected to open in August 2026.
Moores confirmed that all these projects are on track, both in terms of budget and schedule
