Estimating Costs for 5,000 Square Feet
A 5,000 square-foot steel building is a popular size for many industrial, athletic, commercial, storage, small warehouse and other steel buildings. To give you a sense of perspective, a 5,000 square-foot space gives you about 300 more square feet than a professional basketball court provides.Â
If you are building a relatively simple 5,000 square-foot steel building and don’t have to meet stringent wind or snow load code requirements, plan to pay between about $13.46 and $14.40 a square foot to cover the cost of your materials.
So, to purchase and erect a 5,000 square-foot base building, plan to pay somewhere between roughly $98,300 and $145,000. If you have a particularly tight budget, you may be able to help keep expenses manageable by lowering your building’s eave height or roof pitch, among other methods. Limiting customizations should also help keep costs low. Â
Metal Roof Cost
Metal roofing installation costs $8 to $14 per square foot installed vs. an asphalt shingle roof which costs $4 to $9 per square foot installed. Most homeowners spend between $7,958 and $14,712 in total. The long-term investment return of metal roofing over the quick to be replaced asphalt roof is highly preferred. Prices depend on roof size and slope, cost to remove old roof, type of metal used, painting, and installation labor.
National Average Cost | $11,129 |
Minimum Cost | $7,019 |
Maximum Cost | $30,600 |

Types of Metal Framing Studs
-
C-Shaped Metal Studs
You control every detail and aspect of your home, which means you have the final say on how it turns out. Plus, most suppliers will work with you to find a solution that meets your needs while still being within your budget
-
U-Shaped Channels
Stud track does not have a stiffening return and appears as a simple U shape when viewed in cross section. U channels do not have regular punched openings. Attach these members to floors and ceilings to align stud systems.
-
I-Shaped Metal Studs
Use I-shaped studs to frame around vertical shafts, ducts and stairwells where you can only apply wall surfacing materials to the outer flange of the stud. The I-stud is available in 2-1/2-, 4- and 6-inch sizes.
-
H-Shaped Metal Studs
Metal studs that have an H-shaped cross section are a slightly heavier version of the I-shaped metal stud. H-shaped studs have a wider flange for receiving wall finishes.
Metal Building Cost Per Square Foot
Steel buildings cost anywhere from $15-$28 per sq ft for the building kit components. Prices vary depending upon building location, building specifications, and optional upgrades.
Square foot prices reduce as the overall building size increases (see table below).
Another factor that will keep the price down is if you choose standard size buildings such as: 30’x40′, 60’x40′, 50’x80′, 50’x50′ 60’x100′, 80’x100′ etc. (as opposed to irregular sizes 33’x47′ etc.)
Example Square Foot Building Costs:
Building Size (ft) | Square Footage (SF) | Estimate Cost | Cost / Square Foot |
---|---|---|---|
30×40 | 1,200 | $18,600 | $15.50 |
30×60 | 1,800 | $22,500 | $15.50 |
40×60 | 2,400 | $37,200 | $15.50 |
50×50 | 2,500 | $38,700 | $15.50 |
50×80 | 4,000 | $62,000 | $15.50 |
50×100 | 5,000 | $77,500 | $15.50 |
60×100 | 6,000 | $93,000 | $15.50 |
