The price for installing any kind of floor is based on square footage. Also, the materials you order will be based on square footage, and the installer will give you a price for labor based on square footage plus 10% for fitting and waste. Flooring that must be trimmed to accommodate floor registers, stairs, pipes, corners, or alcoves will incur waste.
Calculating the quantity of flooring material required for a large commercial building project can be a time-consuming operation. The flooring estimates method based on manual calculations may be appropriate for small home construction projects. However, for large commercial projects, construction estimating software such as Planswift or Bluebeam, among others, may be beneficial to the project manager. You can outsource floor estimators to a reputable firm like ours. This will save you a meaningful amount of time, which you can devote to other parts of handling bids and the supply chain.
Estimate Florida Consulting helps to win more construction projects to increase the profit of your company. A general contractor, subcontractor, architect, developer, floor contractor, etc can use our floor estimating service.
Flooring Cost Per Square Foot
The flooring in your home is a large part of its value. It won’t pay to go cheap, but you also need to keep in mind the bottom line of your budget. While cost will factor as a big part of your final choice, you’ll choose your flooring based on your local climate, dirt attraction, foot traffic, pets, and the use of the rooms where you want the flooring. Here are the average flooring installation costs by square foot:
Flooring Installation | Cost Per Square Foot |
---|---|
National Average Cost | $10 |
Minimum Cost | $5 |
Maximum Cost | $22 |
Average Range | $8 to $13 |
Average Cost to Install Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring installation in a 330 square foot living room costs between $1090 and $2,940 with most homeowners spending about $1,975 when professionally installed. Your final rate will depend on the room size and labor costs to install. The cost of laying laminate flooring is $5 to $10 per square foot, but a commercial level floor with radiant heating underneath can cost up to three times that.

The average cost to install wood flooring is between $10 and $18 per square foot depending on the type. The cost of installing hardwood floors in a 330-square foot living room is between $2,940 and $5,780 with the average homeowner paying $4,360.
Wood flooring provides a feeling of warmth in a room. A popular choice, they are easy to decorate around, since wood colors are considered neutral and pleasing to the eye. -
Engineered wood $6–$20
Engineered wood with a float installation is $8–$22 per square foot. The cost depends on the thickness of the surface veneer. Floating is the most common installation method and involves attaching or clicking the panels, which blocks out moisture.
-

Laminate Flooring Installation

Remove Tongue
Inspect each plank before beginning installation. For the first row along straight walls, remove the tongue on all long side joints and the short side of the first plank using a table saw.
-
Trace and Cut
For uneven walls, trace contour with a compass on the tongue side of the plank, and cut with a jigsaw.
-
Assemble First Row
Assemble the first row with tongue side way from the wall. Insert the end tongue into the end groove and rotate downward to assemble. Keep planks aligned and joints closed.
-
Provide Space for Expansion
Provide a 3/8” space for expansion on all sides using wooden spacers. Note: Two spacers, thick-side to thick-side, are 3/8”.
-
Cut for New Rows
Cut the first piece at least 8” long using a table saw. Start new rows using pieces trimmed from the previous row, ensuring at least a 12” end joint offset.
-
Assemble Second Row
Insert the tongue of the second-row plank into the groove of the first-row plank at a slight angle until the laminate edges meet. Next, rotate down until the joints lock. For the next plank, join the short end of the plank first. You will see a gap on the long-side joints when the plank is rotated down. Raise the outside edge of the plank upward approximately 1”. Keep this angle as you push the plank in until the laminate edges meet. Rotate downward on the plank until the joint locks. Repeat previous steps to complete installation.
