South Station tower construction halted after beam falls
BOSTON – Construction work at the site above South Station in Boston has been halted following an incident where a large, heavy beam fell on Wednesday.
The beam plummeted from the under-construction tower and became wedged on the building’s ninth floor. The fall resulted in the shattering of two windows.
Fire department authorities noted that had the beam continued its descent, it would have landed on a pedestrian walkway leading to the platform, an area frequented by commuters.
On Thursday, the MBTA informed the contractor that the recent incident had disrupted its transportation services and posed a threat to public safety.

Consequently, the MBTA demanded an immediate halt to the construction work and advised the developer of their obligation to cover all expenses incurred by the MBTA due to the incident.
