Construction signage confuses drivers in New Middletown

NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Construction season in the Mahoning Valley is underway.

Major road construction in New Middletown is causing difficulties for drivers, particularly with the work on State Route 170, a component of a larger ODOT initiative. Police Chief Anthony Protopapa highlights the challenges drivers face with the detours.

“Entering the town, the signage is clear. Northbound travel is allowed, but southbound is not. There are large signs all along the route,” Protopapa explained.

A significant worry is drivers going the wrong way.

“This Saturday alone, we issued 12 written warnings, but now we’re moving to citations,” Protopapa stated.

The construction also affects local businesses. Hallowed Grounds Coffee Company, among others, is eager to reassure customers of their ongoing operations.

“Community support is crucial for us. It’s what sustains our businesses, seeing our regulars daily,” said Victoria Clark, owner of Hallowed Grounds Coffee Company.

“Access to our store is still possible. Local traffic rules include our customers,” noted K.C. Kerrigan of Village Ace Hardware.

Protopapa suggests using Calla Road and its connecting streets to reach local businesses.

“We’re open and ready for visitors, even if it means a slight detour,” said Melissa Chambers, owner of the Tiger’s Table.

Business owners acknowledge the necessity of the roadwork but find the signage confusing.

“The problem is the numerous ‘Road Closed’ signs. Even GPS systems like Waze reroute users away from New Middletown entirely,” Clark added.

The construction is scheduled to continue until fall 2025.
